MHHS Honors Mrs. Devona Pendergrass

Brooke Chapman, Adviser

Students will be on a special schedule Friday, May 7th as we honor the life of our librarian, Mrs. Devona Pendergrass.

According to an email from Superintendent Dr. Long-

Devona had worked in the district since 1986 and served as a teacher, bus driver, bowling coach, club sponsor, and librarian.

Devona and her husband Neal — one of our devoted School Board members — were childhood sweethearts, were married for more than 45 years, and raised two wonderful sons who attended MHPS. They recently became grandparents to baby Alice who Devona doted on endlessly.

As a leader in several library educator associations in the state and the nation, she impacted many lives for the better through her advocacy for literacy and technology in schools.

Devona took care of her people and loved them well. Countless kids and colleagues took refuge in her library, and she made them feel at home and at ease. She helped students escape into books when they needed a healthy outlet. She was a cornerstone of our Bomber family, and it’s hard to picture our high school library without her in it.
